What is Tajweed Class?

Tajweed class is a specialized course designed to teach the science of Tajweed, which is the set of rules governing the pronunciation of the Quran. The word "Tajweed" itself means "to improve" or "to make better," and in the context of Quranic recitation, it refers to the precise articulation of each letter and word according to the way it was revealed to Prophet Muhammad.

The primary goal of Tajweed class is to enable students to recite the Quran with accuracy and fluency, preserving its original sound and meaning. This involves learning the proper pronunciation of each letter, understanding the different rules of articulation, and mastering the various techniques of recitation.

What is Tajweed Class?


  • Makharij al-Huruf (Points of Articulation): This refers to the specific points in the mouth and throat from which each letter is pronounced. Students learn to identify these points and practice articulating each letter correctly.

  • Sifat al-Huruf (Characteristics of Letters): Each letter has unique characteristics, such as whether it is voiced or unvoiced, aspirated or unaspirated. Students learn to recognize and apply these characteristics in their recitation.

  • Rules of Noon Sakinah and Tanween: These rules govern the pronunciation of the letter "noon" when it is silent or when it carries a tanween (a grammatical ending indicating indefiniteness).

  • Rules of Meem Sakinah: Similar to the rules of noon sakinah, these rules govern the pronunciation of the letter "meem" when it is silent.

  • Rules of Madd (Prolongation): These rules determine the length of certain vowels in specific contexts.

  • Rules of Waqf (Pausing) and Ibtida (Resuming): These rules govern when and where to pause during recitation, as well as how to resume after a pause.
